This year’s Tang Prize in Biopharmaceutical Science recognizes the groundbreaking field of cell-based immunotherapy, which has transformed the history of cancer treatment. Among the laureates, Dr. Carl H. June, a pioneer in the development of CAR-T cell therapy, has played a pivotal role in advancing cell therapy from fundamental research to clinical application worldwide.Faced with the major challenge of producing therapeutic cells on a large scale, Dr. June pioneered the anti-CD3/CD28 magnetic bead expansion technology, laying the foundation for standardized CAR-T manufacturing worldwide. He also co-developed the incorporation of the 4-1BB costimulatory domain, which significantly enhanced the proliferation and long-term persistence of T cells in the human body. He subsequently led clinical trials of CD19 CAR-T therapy, bringing new hope to patients with relapsed or refractory hematologic cancers. His groundbreaking work ultimately contributed to the development of Kymriah, the world’s first CAR-T cell therapy approved by the U.S. FDA in 2017, marking a major turning point in modern cancer treatment.
Taipei Medical University is honored to welcome Dr. Carl H. June, Tang Prize Laureate in Biopharmaceutical Science, to share his insights and experience. He will explore the revolutionary field that has defined much of his career—from transforming gene editing into living medicines, to precisely targeting tumors, correcting genetic defects, and developing new approaches to autoimmune diseases. Through this intergenerational academic dialogue, Dr. June will also engage with young scholars and invite them to explore the exciting future of cell and gene therapies.
